Sandbridge Family Vacation

I booked us a condo by the beach for 4 nights so we could have a family vacation this summer.  We hoped that Alex would do well traveling now that he was older and he had transitioned into a big boy bed.  He did a great job sleeping in a twin bed with Brooke in her own twin bed.  They had a lot of fun except Brooke was not very happy to be woken up an hour earlier every morning by him poking her in the face and wanting to play (I guess she didn’t realize that Mommy gets up everyday and plays with him until she finally decides to get up).  Both kids had a great time at the beach and we had better than predicted weather.  Mostly we stayed at our condo complex and went to the beach and pool everyday.  Our condo was north facing and had a great view of the ocean and Back Bay.  The great thing about Sandbridge is that with the exception of a few restaurants, one store, and one ice cream place, it is largely residential so it is very quiet and peaceful. One night we went to ice cream and the last night we went to a nearby park.  We really enjoyed spending time with each other on vacation, it was relaxing and fun for everyone.

Sprinkler Playtime

Last time I was at Taylor’s I spent $6 on a multi-spray sprinkler head for the kids to play with.  Unfortunately, all of the settings except what Brooke calls ‘the baby one’ frighten Alex.  The kids still had fun running around with it on the ‘baby’ setting.  It was a good way to spend a hot day at home.

Harborfest 2016

We were very excited to check out Harborfest this year (or as I was calling it for the kids ‘the boat festival!’)  We traveled up to Norfolk and as we arrived saw the start of the Junkanoo parade.  Then we sampled 757’s finest food trucks and ate in the grass by the water.  When we started to look at the boats we caught a hydroboard performance complete with loop-de-loops.  I kept explaining the hydro forces and propulsion to Brooke but she had a hard time understanding that water could force a person up, even when I used propulsion in air as an example (as it is in one of her books about aircrafts) she kept asking ‘how the water is keeping him up?’  We found a completely free arcade and did some family skeeball.  Then while AJ took Alex to get changed I looked up and saw real mermaids.  Brooke and I rushed over so she could see them, have per picture taken, and get a real mermaid scale.  There were lawn hammocks and games, including mini golf.  After looking at the tall ships, the kids got a carousel ride.  Water report: Good day to be at Norfolk harbor.

Brooke’s New Big Girl Bed

Yesterday evening we received the last component of Brooke’s new big girl bed that we ordered after Alex transferred into his toddler bed.  I stayed up late last night putting together the bed frame by myself to surprise her with today.  I had to finish assembling it in her room during her quiet time and Alex’s nap today.  After I was done she was so excited to see and play on her new bed.  Alex accidentally fell out of his toddler bed during nap an hour early and ended up playing with us in her bed too after refusing to go back to sleep.  They had fun pretending to sleep in it and playing hide and seek.  She said she loves her new bed.

Summer School Date

Today we put both kids into summer school.  They will both attend in the fall, Brooke returning and Alex for his first time at school.  The school had 5 weeks in June that they offered for summer school and we decided to send them one day a week when AJ was off so we could have a date.  It was Alex’s first time and he walked right in and according to his teacher ‘had the best first day one could ask for’.  He was most excited to wear his Koala backpack which he got from his Great Uncle Eddy sent from Australia when he was 9 months old.  We had saved in his closet until he was ready for school. On our morning date we got to go kayaking on our local waterways and have a delicious lunch out before picking both happy kids up at the end of their day at summer school.
