Williamsburg Vacation

We took a family vacation to Williamsburg, VA.  Getting out-of-town, even if it is just up the road from us, is always fun.  The first day we went to the Saude Winery, where Laura got to try some nice wines, then had dinner at Colonial Williamsburg.  On the second and third day we went to Busch Gardens, which was Brooke’s first time there.  She seemed to have a fun time – – playing in the kids area and riding the kiddie rides (surprisingly she was under the cut off for the roller coasters… maybe next year).

Enjoying Sunday

We started off the day by taking a drive to Munden Point Park where we played around in the water and enjoyed the beautiful weather.  Brooke talked the whole way home while eating Cheerios, only to fall asleep just outside our neighborhood.  After a nap for Brooke, playing around the house and then buying Brooke some new shoes, Laura treated us all to some gelato – – Brooke enjoyed some too.  It was a great family day.

People often ask me…

People often ask me if now that Brooke is walking if things are harder for me.  “Her walking doesn’t make it harder,” I answer, which is completely true.  If anything her walking makes it easier.  My relaxed walking cadence is faster than most adults and as a distance runner that goes for running too.  I am not worried about ‘keeping up’ because she has to keep up with me.  As it stands, I have more energy than she does.  What IS a problem, however, is that she is TWICE the size she should be at this age.  Therefore, she can reach things that a baby her age shouldn’t be able to. Such as: anything not in the exact center of the dinning room table, everything on every table top downstairs, all shelves and top of all bookcases, my desk top, the top of the banister, our nightstands and dressers, bathroom vanities, etc, etc.  In fact, we have to keep our remote control for the TV on the fireplace mantle because the is the only surface downstairs she cannot reach. Now a two year old (which is how big Brooke is) has some knowledge and understanding of what to touch (whether they decide to listen to you notwithstanding).  Unfortunately, it is near impossible to expect that cognitive ability out of a 13 month old.  This is why we have these EXTRA TALL gates.  One keeps her out of the kitchen because, yes, she would reach the burners.  This morning after breakfast Brooke decided after being let out of her high chair that she didn’t like that Mommy was washing her tray and putting the dishes in the dishwasher (which mind you took all of 60-90 seconds) and decided to cry and then attempt to climb into the kitchen.  I was so surprised I couldn’t help but laugh and take a few pictures.

Independence Day Celebration

In Chesapeake they have Independence day celebrations on July 3rd so that city employees can be home with their families on July 4th.  We wanted to show Brooke the fireworks this year since it was a special occasion and planned accordingly by having her take two long naps (4.5 hours total) so she could stay up a bit later.  I also bought her a cute new dress.  We went to a friends BBQ where she had a good time playing with their two dogs and all the other children and then we went to Chesapeake City Park.  Brooke loved clapping her hands as the army band played music; specifically during ‘Stars and Stripes Forever’.  She also had lots of fun walking around and interacting with all the people there.  When the fireworks started she wasn’t afraid but was mesmerized.  After a while though it started getting loud and she enjoyed the rest of the show being held by myself and Laura.
